World Premiere: Trumpet Concerto

  • Cheltenham Town Hall UK (map)

One of the UK’s leading summer musical events, Cheltenham Music Festival, presents a bespoke all-British programme based around the World Premiere from the first female composer to be commissioned by the Festival in 1956, Thea Musgrave. Her Trumpet Concerto has been co-commissioned for our Festival by the CBSO in celebration of their centenary, and the LA Philharmonic for Festival Artistic Director Alison Balsom.

The new concerto, written specifically for Balsom, is inspired by a series of landscapes by the Scottish Artist Victoria Crowe. Around 18 minutes in length and in five movements it will demonstrate the full range of the Trumpet’s emotive capacity.

After another barnstorming success in 2017, audiences will be thrilled to see the return of Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the beloved City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for the second symphonic concert of the weekend.  Thea will give a pre-performance talk at 6PM in the Cheltenham Town Hall.
