The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College

Now in her 80s, Thea Musgrave is one of the UK’s most vibrant and imaginative composers. The Voices of our Ancestors juxtaposes fascinating poems from across the centuries, cultures and the globe, inspired by the chance finding of the Vedic Creation Hymn (circa 1500 BCE). She writes ‘After immersing myself in the poetry of other cultures and distant times, I have chosen 11 other poems which astonishingly spoke with great meaning to me today. To dramatize the situations described in the poems, my operatic and story-telling experience gives a theatrical dimension to what is essentially a concert piece.’ This fabulous new work uses movement and positioning to add both dramatic and sonic impact.

Born in Scotland, yet living in the US this is Musgrave’s first major work for chorus and ensemble in the UK since 1996. JAM is delighted to bring home this highly accomplished composer, reminding audiences of her outstanding artistic ability. Mealor’s beautiful a cappella song cycle (JAM commission 2010) and Patterson’s powerful work for all forces (JAM commission 2005) are joined by stunning works from Whitacre and Lauridsen. This concert is a must for lovers of choral music!

Please note at 6.45pm there will be a pre-concert talk by Thea Musgrave.
